9-1-1 in North Carolina has been around since November 1969, when Avery County implemented the first Basic 9-1-1 system in the state On October 1, 1986, Gaston County implemented the state's first Enhanced 9-1-1 system.  By December, 1995, 55 counties had Enhanced 9-1-1, 31 counties had Basic, and 4 had part Basic/part Enhanced.  But 10 counties remained without any type of 9-1-1 service what-so-ever.   From it's humble beginnings, the system has grown and evolved to provide high quality 9-1-1 services in our State.   All 100 North Carolina counties offer Enhanced 9-1-1 service today many with features not dreamed of back in the 1980's during 9-1-1's implementation 'heyday'.

Today 9-1-1 service across the state is provided by the following primary local exchange carriers (LECs):

Verizon
BellSouth
Sprint
